Wine is quite calorific, with less calorific wines being produced in Europe due to production restrictions requiring a lower alcohol level in wine.
Given that wine is essentially the fermented juice of crushed fructose-filled grapes (there is 16g sugar in 100g of grapes), the high calorie content may not come as a surprise.
There are between 70 and 90 calories in 100ml of wine (on average, 80), and wine is served in 125ml (small), 175ml (medium), and 250ml (large) glasses at restaurants.
So a small glass of wine contains approximately 100 calories, a medium contains approximately 140 calories, and a large contains approximately 200 calories.
Because a bottle of wine has 750ml (75cl), the average number of calories in a bottle of wine is 600.
These are estimations, but we do know how many calories are in a typical white, red, and rose wine, but this varies.
Rose wine is the least calorific of the three, containing between 70 and 80 calories per 100ml.
White wine has between 73 and 83 calories per 100ml, while red wine has between 75 and 85 calories per 100ml, making it the most calorific of the bunch.
The variation in average energy content of these wines is quite modest, and the ultimate calorie quantity in a bottle will depend on how much alcohol is in it.
A rare 14.5% bottle of wine might contain up to 90 calories every 100ml, for a total of 675 calories per bottle. Don't forget that those calories are pure sugar!
Low calorie wines have been made for many years, and the majority of them claim to have only 60 – 70 calories per 125ml.
